The coastline is known for its extensive beaches of fine golden sand, intimate coves and some of the most dramatic limestone cliff faces and rock-formations in the world. At the western end of the Algarve, close to Lagos, stunning caves and grottoes can be accessed by boat.
The region is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon – a nature reserve of over 170 km2 attracting hundreds of different birds.
The Algarve was conquered from the Moors by the Portuguese king in 1292 and the Moorish influence can still be seen in its unique architecture.
Inland from the coast the terrain is hilly but interspersed with rich fertile valleys. The highest point is the mountain range of Monchique.
Whilst tourism now makes up the majority of the Algarve’s economy, agriculture is very important with cultivation of fig, almond, orange, carob bean and cork oak. Fishing of sardines and various seafood and its processing is still a vital part of the region’s heritage.
In the 1960s the Algarve became a very popular destination for British tourists and now many of these visitors own their own property in the region.
The Algarve has the perfect weather and climate with reportedly more hours of sunshine than California and only short periods of rainfall, generally between November and March.
There are over 30 golf courses in the Algarve ranging from 9-hole courses over the Algarve grassland to dramatic coastal 18-hole courses set amongst the cliffs, making golf enjoyable for everyone regardless of ability. The Old Course at Vilamoura and the Royal Course at Vale de Lobo have hosted international tournaments and competitions.
With a stunning coastline and Atlantic waves, the Algarve is the perfect place for all water-sports. Surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, scuba diving and water-skiing. The EU Blue Flag marinas in Lagos, Portimao, Vilamoura and Albufeira are popular with those preferring sailing.
